Smartphones Offer Smart Solutions for Physicians

The use of mobile devices by physicians in a professional capacity continues to increase at a dramatic rate. It’s estimated that 80% of all U.S. physicians were using smartphones by 2012. Contrast that number with 2001, when only about 30 percent of physicians used smartphone technology. Physicians are using smartphones for an increasing number of professional applications, everything from drug reference and clinical information to patient care and administrative functions. Over the last few years there has been an explosion of apps specifically designed for healthcare professionals. If you’re looking for detailed information to help you choose the right app for your medical practice, check out, a website that reviews mobile technology for medical professionals.

Another example of a smartphone app being used by physicians is Resolution MD Mobile, which allows a physician to see and manipulate 3D images of a stroke victim’s brain using a tablet or smartphone, saving precious time on hospital runs in life-threatening situations. Emergency physicians and cardiologists are also using smartphones and email to see results of electrocardiograms on patients who are being transported by ambulance. Doctors can review the results, sent by paramedics, before the patient arrives at the hospital, sometimes up to 20 or 30 minutes in advance. This gives medical teams in the emergency room and the cardiac catheterization lab time to prepare and can also help paramedics with triage.
